About our Outrigger Canoe tour

Are you looking to get away from the crowds and off the beaten path? Our canoe tour, such as the Hawaiian Outrigger Canoe, are tailored to providing an experience for you, your family or friends to experience a great adventure away from the crowds.

Outrigger Canoe can be quite fast compared to other types of canoes, it is also capable of being paddled in rougher water.

After a water safety and paddling orientation we depart in our Hawaiian Outrigger Canoe from Urca to the entrance of Guanabara Bay located in the heart of Rio de Janeiro.

A little history of the Hawaiian Outrigger Canoe

Originating in the Pacific Ocean, these vessels are also known as Polynesian canoes, Hawaiian canoes, wa’a or va’a. Very traditional in the region of the Polynesian Triangle, they are part of everyday life in Hawaii, Tahiti, French Polynesia, and Easter Island, as well as in Australia and Southeast Asia.

The first boats were simple, built with rudimentary tools: two large pieces of tree trunk joined together and a central sail. The construction of a Hawaiian canoe began with choosing a tree from the forest, which would then be worshiped and revered. Canoes were essential to Pacific peoples, serving for transportation, fishing, expeditions, and sports.

The practice gained momentum in 1876. The first Hawaiian canoe club was founded in 1908. In the 1970s, the sport expanded in Australia and is now practiced worldwide. In Brazil, it became popular in 2000, starting with groups in SĂ£o Paulo, Santos, and Rio de Janeiro.
