The Tijuca National Park is a preserved area of Atlantic Rain Forest that is visited by Cariocas and tourists for the practice of sports, hikes and walking. Native plants and fruitful trees compose the flora of the Tijuca Forest.

A little history of Tijuca Forest

One of the largest urban forests in the world, was established in the 19th century by Emperor Pedro II to reforest the area affected by deforestation caused by sugarcane and coffee cultivation. Replanting was carried out by Major Manuel Gomes Archer in the second half of the 19th century in a successful effort to protect Rio’s water supply.

Many years after the reforestation, In 1961, Tijuca Forest was declared a National Park. Nowadays it is the smallest and the most visited National Park in Brazil. Besides many visitors who visit every day Christ the Redeemer statue, that is inside the National Park, many areas of the park still unexplored by the visitors.
