About our tour to Grumari and Prainha Beaches
Get off the beaten track! You’ve probably already heard of and seen many pictures of the city’s two main beaches: Ipanema and Copacabana. So why not try something different?
Grumari and Prainha beaches are located in a nature reserve which, unlike the urban beaches, is devoid of any buildings or major thoroughfares and is exposed only to green mountains and stretches of golden sand. From Prainha, you can take an approximately 50 minute walk to a viewpoint offering privileged views of the west zone of the city.
Returning from Grumari and Prainha to the city we will pass all the beaches along the coast of the city with many opportunities to take photos.
A little about the history of Prainha and Grumari
Transformed into an Environmental Protection Area (APA) in 1990, Prainha, as its name suggests, is small in length, just 0.7km. It is located in the Recreio dos Bandeirantes region. Prainha attracts countless surfers due to the quality of its waves and has a narrow strip of sand embedded between the Pedra Branca massif and the Atlantic Ocean. In 1999, the Parque Municipal Ecological Park of Prainha was created, which brings together the Surfing Museum and ecological trails.
Grumari beach, which can be reached following the same route as Prainha, is the last open sea beach reachable by vehicle in the Barra da Tijuca region. With a wild landscape, the beach is 2.8km long. Also very popular with surfers, Grumari has a story to tell! Legend has it that the name Grumari derives from the word Grumarim, from the Tupi-Guarani, which would be a firm bush used by the Tupi Indians who would have lived in the region.
The Grumari Municipal Natural Park was listed by the State in 1985, and by the Municipality, in 1986. Grumari beach was practically isolated, after all, its access was via the old road of Grumari, winding and narrow, coming from Guaratiba or via the trail colonial period in Serra de Piabas. It was only in the 1970s that Avenida Estado da Guanabara was opened, connecting Recreio dos Bandeirantes to Prainha and Grumari.
